Scottish Agates - New Zealand

Agates from New Zealand are not as well known as a lot of agates from other world localities. It has been suggested that the agates from New Zealand are lacking colour despite having beautiful banding and patterning. That being said the agates from here have their own beauty and are unique both in their colouring and texture. Most agates tend to come from localities in the South Island§ with the area around Christchurch’ being the most prolific. Most of the localities are on private land and permission to collect can sometimes be difficult to get.

Bill Billing, although eventually retiring to North Island spent a lifetime collecting in the South Island on the Canterbury plains. During that time he came to make many contacts and friends in the back country folk who allowed him to “fossick” on their stations. He found many collecting sites that were previously unknown even to local Rock Club members. The agates here are a small representation of his collection.
