Scottish Agates - Ethiebeaton Quarry

This quarry was identified as agate producing about the same time as Ardownie Quarry was discovered. They are in fact only about 1 km apart near the Tayside town of Monifieth. Agates have been found here as recent as 2000. Although there is some agate material to be found anywhere within the quarry the main agate producing area was confined to a small site on the north-west side of the quarry.

In this area nodules can be abundant but the vast majority of them are rather bland dark chalcedonic material but occasionally an agate will be found that, although small, will exhibit a beautiful blue/grey fortification pattern with often a subtle pink hue that has become typical of this locality.

While agates from here may occasionally be as large as 70mm in diameter most are small at around 30- 40mm their beauty and pattern is subtle and highly sought after by collectors.
