Scottish Agates - Dunure & Turnberry

This locality comprises the beaches and fields in the area south of Ayr around the small coastal villages of Dunure, Maidens and Turnberry. The Old Red Sandstone lavas are here exposed on the beaches and at some inland sites but the majority of agates in this area are found by walking the ploughed fields, preferably after a heavy downpour of rain. The beaches can also yield some good specimens but they have been well picked over in recent years so finds here are limited.

Occasionally serendipity can play a part if the collector hears about areas where the lava is being excavated for new buildings or where local farmers are digging into the lava for aggregate. It is always worthwhile taking the opportunity of “having a look” because the rewards can be spectacular. The author has a small collection of beautiful onyx agates found while foundations of a garage were being excavated at Dunure.

The agates from this area show a wide range of colours. Those from the fields are predominantly red in colour but beautiful complex multi-coloured agates can be found in the Maidens and Turnberry area.
