The Cheviots
The Cheviot hills lie on the border between Scotland and England and are centred around a large granite core. This granite core and associated lavas are the remains of an ancient large volcano of Old Red Sandstone age. The terrain here is mainly coarse grass and heather so good rock outcrops are fairly rare. Some of the best localities lie near the River Coquet on the English side but nice agates are found in the ploughed fields on the Scottish side.
Cheviot agates are often strongly coloured with predominating reds and pinks and they can sometimes be large up to 150-200mm in diameter These specimens are from the collection of Paul Forster. They were originally collected from the Cheviot Hills by the late Gilbert Hall who was a member of the Stanley Lapidary Club. They are exceptional specimens and typical of the Cheviot agates. |
